Here's an interesting paper (admittedly from a US source) that deals with a discussion I have been having with my GP about the woeful lack of holistic treatment for this patient cohort.

http://www.u-ok.net/colitis_arthritis.html

There are 152,000 people in UK with IBD of whom 25% (38,000) have related RA. That's a massive cohort. And yet we have to attend two separate clinics to discuss two separate diseases!

Hexham - Northumberland - Loads of spectacular walks - all I need now are the joints to go with them! :)

Enthesitis (2012)
Ulcerative Colitis (1990)

hi Paul

Unfortunately I couldn't open your link but that is a massive percentage of R.A. sufferers with IBD. It's interesting the anti-tnf drugs are a successful treatment for IBD as well as R.A. How is IBD diagnosed? Can it be controlled with diet? it's a shame your rheumy specialist can not discuss the IBD, what a pain having to attend 2 clinics. I wish there was one surgeon that dealt with all our body parts, I am now seeing 4 surgeons for different crumbly joints.

Best wishes
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca link in original post has been fixed. IBD is indeed controllable through diet to some extent and I do a lot of that. The Rheumy specialist knows a little about IBD and the Gastro about RA but what our cohort needs is a specialist in both. Sad Escpecially when the RA is directly caused by the IBD

Thanks Paul for the link, I found it really interesting. Sounds like Rheumatologists should be spending more time investigating our guts instead of our joints. I did read a while ago that 60% of our immune system lies in the protective layer of our stomachs. That's where all the problems begin...

Best wishes
